Director Jorge R. Gutierrez and Reel FX Animation Studios have announced development is going forward on a sequel to 2014 animated feature, The Book of Life.
One of the biggest independent animated features of the past decade, The Book of Life centres around the Day of the Dead, and follows a love triangle that emerges between three former childhood friends, as the sensitive guitarist Manola (Diego Luna) and narcissistic Joaquin (Channing Tatum) compete for the heart of the sultry Maria (Zoe Saldana). The gods themselves would take an interest in the romantic competition, placing wagers on just which of the two young men would emerge triumphant.
“The sequel grew from that and people asking what was gonna happen with the characters, what’s gonna happen to the gods?”, Gutierrez reveals. “The sequel embraces all these things and, in a weird way, is a continuation of the story with everybody you love from the first movie.” The director will helm the follow-up, which will be shot in stereoscopic 3D for Reel FX.
